I've been using CFL's for over 5 years now. The early ones were noisy (and
didn't last long) but in recent years I have no problem with them. To hear
noise from my CFL lamps I have to wrap an antenna wire around the bulb!

But the sources of noise are legion, as others pointed out. Plasma TV's are
particularly bad since there's no way to shield the display beyond wrapping
it in metal foil (hard to watch that way ;-). Washing machines, coffee pots,
stoves, and refrigerators, LED lamps, indeed, just about anything that plugs
into the wall is a good suspect these days since almost anything designed in
the last several years has a microprocessor embedded inside and
manufacturers pay little heed to shielding the power supplies.
