These early amp prototypes were a real learning experience for us. Our staff did an excellent job, and they worked very well. However, after sizing up the costs and risks, we decided to enter the market with something smaller (K3-size) featuring a zero-noise (linear) power supply based on a toroidal transformer. 500-600 W seemed like an ideal target, and there you have it: the KPA500.

I certainly wouldn't rule out other amps in the future.

The majority of my operating, contesting and DXing is at the 100 watt level with my K3. BUT on 80 and 160 (even though I easily got WAC with 100 watts on 160) there are times that the 1000 or 1500 watts on 160 is needed. It may not be due to propagation but sometime ya just gotta have the smash to punch through the other guy's noise to get that QSO. Thus I have an AL1500 on the table that sees rare usage but its there when I need it.

I would rather have a quality Elecraft there. My 2 cents.
