Hello Oliver & all,
I got # 3156.
Same remark about missing washers, thank God for the spare parts bag..
I agree on Olivia, that would be an excellent addition.
One thing I noticed also is that the battery holder holes on the back cover
were slightly off..
I could still put the screws in but they started at an angle, and it was rather
hard to get them threaded all the way.
They were oddly all off by the same amount. Maybe a problem with the case
holder while drilling..
Also, editing the CW memories with the Mac utility program doesn't always work,
as it sometimes refuses entries.
It seems like there has to be a space at the end of the line to allow it to be
saved?
Other than that, the radio is excellent! The filtering down to 50Hz is awesome.
I don't know about the microphone, I don't have one ;-)
Gil.

I wonder if Ross has checked the possible short-circuits on the back of the
encoder.
This was a mystery for me building a K2, and only remedied by placing a sheet
of sturdy plastic on the back of the encoder.

I would trust a Bird43 meter to be more accurate (but even they only
claim 5% of full range). I have compared my 1976 era Bird43 with one
that is only a couple years old using the same element and had 10%
disagreement in readings using a Bird dummy load. My old meter read
lower in power.
On another note I have measured the output of my K3 in TEST mode and
1.0mw is pretty close when measured with a HP432A mw power meter. I
trust the K3 meter is as accurate as my Bird43.
Power readings into an antenna are relative and will vary with
reactance of the load. Not uncommon to see more output than the
radio can deliver when into a reactive load. All SWR meters are
reading RF voltage on the line and that depends where on the line you
look unless the load is perfectly resistive 50-ohms.
I spent about six weeks making coax line loss and matching
measurements on my eme array in 2010. Load variations drove me crazy
with non repeatable measurements. Only after carefully using the
same test leads and loads was I able to get a satisfactory set of
measurements (on all 8 antennas). IN the end my line loss came out
to 1.7 dB +/- 0.1 dB. I did determine that I improved loss by about
0.2 dB by replacement of bad cables. That represents 5% of my power
or 65w. 1.7 dB line loss means I get 68% of my 144-MHz transmit
power to the antenna (1000w for 1500w output). The rest is warming
my cables (LMR600 and 1-5/8 inch Heliax).

I finished my KSB2 module and pluged it in. I get the normal "Elecraft" when
powering up but I can not go further. I am getting "--" on the menu items
SSBA and SSBC. I tried to do some voltage check and got 6 volts on U1 pin 1.
I removed U1 and checked for bent or broken pins. I checked orientation of
all diodes and electrolitics. I examined the board for solder bridges and
reflowed solder on the parts that looked a bit bare. Now I am stuck. Is
there any way I can check for a bad U1??

You could remove the left side panel and look for the two TMP sockets facing
out of the end of the KXV3A. These are for the K144XV. If you have the KXV3,
there will be no TMP sockets.
See the K144XV installation manual. There is a photo, showing the TMP sockets
on the KXV3A, on p13.

I checked the invoice for K3 s/n 2295, my older K3. It has the KXV3. As I
am purchasing the K144XV, I have added the KXV3A upgrade to my order. Since
I have an OCXO, I am also ordering the K144RFLK.
Thanks to Gary of Elecraft (and several others) who responded. Elecraft

Hi Paula,
Do you have a separate receive only antenna connected to the KXV3A RX IN BNC
connector. If yes, then you are possibly hearing the COR (carrier operated
relay) protecting the receiver front end from overload. Disconnect the
antenna connector and see if the noise stops.

This wasn't happening before I added a KPA500 into the mix. I don't hear

Ok fixed the no transmit problem Don,
Found a small solder bridge from the 8T Q1 Collector to ground at the mic
header.
So now it transmits but after aligning get low power about 5W on 80 40 30
and not much at all on the other bands.
So back to troubleshooting again. Disappointing. Dc Voltages around the PA
seems ok, I did notice the ALC voltage at U8 seems a bit high at 2.8 -2.9V
The RF troubleshooting in the manual shows similar readings but differfent
as i am using a Fluke RF probe.
Might be time to dig out the scope.
So I think I am close but not there yet.

Cliff,
If you have RF From the TX mixer, then the K2 is going into transmit -
U10 is powered from the 8T voltage rail and that only comes on during
transmit. 8R and 8T control everything.
Help me understand your statement that U9 shows higher voltages. My
guess is that pin 3 stays close to 12 volts.
If that is the case, then your problem is most likely that Q20 is the
problem - it should conduct during TX and if it is working properly it will
reduce the voltage on U9 pin 3 to about 6 volts. Those 2N7000 FETs are
easily damaged by static.

I need a reasonably priced 120 to 150 ohm *working* sounder for an
educational demo to be done in conjunction with a Special Event I'm
running April 27, 2013 (222nd Birthday of Samuel F.B. Morse).
"Reasonable price" means that the $$ is coming out of my own pocket ;)
A Western Union Mainline 15B would be ideal. There are some on eBAY "as
is", etc., but I'd be more comfortable dealing with a fellow lister.
I'm going to build a two-station circuit. I already own one 15B.
Please contact me off-list at [email protected].
Thanks and 73!
Stan WB2LQF
P.S. - The Special Event on April 27th will take place from the front
porch of Morse's Italiante-style mansion on the grounds of his estate
called Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie, New York, overlooking the gorgeous
view Mr. Morse once had of the Hudson River. Callsign is W2M. Details
at arrl.org special events section. This is going to be an All CW and
All-Elecraft event. There will be a K3 on 40 meters running 100 watts
into a 40 meter dipole; a K2 on 20 meters running 15 watts into a
vertical dipole; and a K2 on 17 meters running 15 watts into a
vertically polarized Delta Loop.

Do you mean the PWR button to the left of the hole or the power on/off switch?
I presume you mean the PWR button because I have a little tiny hole there too.

Ray,
That last turn can be difficult, especially if the other turns are not
aligned "just right". I have a tapered stainless steel probe that I
often use to compress those first turns a bit and make a hole for that
last turn. A piece of #12 solid copper wire would do the same thing. I
would not recommend using a wooden stick because it might break inside
the hole and would be difficult to remove.

"Speaker" for the audible alarm. It is a "young person's" alarm though.
The frequency is too high for anyone with nerve damaged ears. They
could replace it with one that is lower in frequency.
