In the KAT500 manual it says the the K3 will not initialise properly unless
power is applied to the KAT500 before switching on the K3. Maybe this is
what happened if, say, you left a DB15 cable from the KAT500 connected to
the K3 when you connected coax directly from the K3 to the KPA500.
73 and good luck

Following up on my High SWR problems (no response from Elecraft Support on
Friday to my email):
I disconnected the KAT500 and KPA500 and connected A4S feed-line directly to
the K3. It loaded beautifully and the internal tuner read 1.0-1. Good, not
the feed line or the K3…
Next I connected the KPA 500 (without the KAT500) and turned the K3 on….the
display "froze" a few characters into the "welcome K4TM" message and the
power button would not turn the K3 off - I had to turn the Astron 35M off to
cut power to the K3. When I turned the K3 on again, I get a blank screen
and must shut the power supply off to turn the K3.
I've had a Kenwood 520SE and a 570D and a TenTec Omni Vii - Drake TR-4
before all that and I know the K3 is smarter than I am but I have never
encountered issues like this before! Any ideas?
Thanks for listening and any help that is directed my way!
And I guess I won't be checking into the Elecraft net today as a result.

More info on my problem. I bypassed the KPA500 and KAT500, turned them
both off, along with the K3
I turned the K3-100 on and activated the internal auto tuner and it
worked its magic and said SWR was 1.1
I then keyed the mic and made a call and within 5 seconds the K3 shut
down…the display blinked a few times and no ERR message showed before it
shut down.
Perplexed, you bet!

HELP, please.
I have the K3-100, KPA-500, and KAT-100 (factory built tuner). I know
to activate the tuner before turning the K3 on (it does make a
difference).
When I turned everything on for a schedule today, I am experiencing high
SWR and the K3 shuts down…also, when I go to tune the KAT500 and tap the
TUNE button, the AUTO begins to flash but when I key the mic (HEIL MD-2)
with audio it clicks and clacks for awhile and SWR drops to 1.2
When I then put the KPA-500 in operate, I get red lights for high SWR
and the amp goes to STBY with the FAULT light lit and the K3 shows FAULT
9 which the manual is "excessive reflected power (high SWR). Well, the
KAT500 says otherwise and I am at a loss to figure it out.
My antenna is a Cushcraft A4S with 110 feet of high quality RG-8
and everything was working just fine a week or so ago.
Last Sunday, I did turn the K3 on and my Vibroplex keyer was
connected. I came in about 30" later and noticed an ERROR message: ERR
KEY Apparently the Viproplex was keyed when I turned power on and I
have disconnected it - could this have anything to do with it?
Appreciate any help you can give.
