Ron,

You can connect the K3 and the K3/0 or another K3 using a null modem cable.
The downside is that you do not have audio or keying capability on the local K3. If you can live with that, just connect with the null modem serial cable - no network involved.
Hold CONFIG down for 3 seconds to put the K3 (or K3/0) into terminal mode.
At least that is how it worked when Wayne first developed the code - some things may have changed since then.
