If you put a SurgeX or Brick Wall box between them and the breaker panel, they'll never see a surge, so no problem. Otherwise you should remove the MOVs.
BTW -- many computers, computer accessories, copy machines, etc. come loaded with MOVs too, and they can cause the same problem.
