i), you turn off the AGC and ii), the linear range of the audio stages is not exceeded. Otherwise, the AGC will work to keep the audio level relatively constant - that's what it's there for ! Switch the display to show the audio voltage, tune in a signal, and switch between 'in' and 'out' with your preamp or attn noting the voltage level change. To convert to dB, it's a simple log function found on most inexpensive calculators: dB= 20log(V1/V2) where V1 and V2 are the two voltage levels noted.
