Rick, I have a KX3. I use it with the ATU and without. There is a menu item that let's you bypass the tuner if you don't need or want it. I have found that it is a really a good tuner as it has tuned everything I've ever tried.
My station is setup with an MFJ intellituner. When I use the MFJ, I bypass the ATU in the KX3 without a problem, generally. The reason I say generally is if the SWR is really high the KX3 starts to fold back power such that there is too little kick off the MFJ. I suspect that this will happen with the SGC tuner. What you will need to do is up the power to 10 watts so that you will have enough power.
