Bob,
thanks for pointing out to the diagnostic commands. Played a bit and I
get the impression there is nothing wrong, basically.
My ATU does this click whenever SWR becomes bad and switches between
"AK105001" and "AK145801". Not a bug, but a feature as it seems, to keep
SWR low.
The K2 ATU does not behave like that, hence my irritation.
The guilty one is my narrow antenna, 40kHz on 40m. During the ARRL DX
contest I worked stations all the way up to 7070, which explains the
need to adjust SWR. Pressing "ATU Tune" after the click of course yields
SWR 1:1.
Can somebody from Elecraft confirm that automatic retune during send is
a feature, and the relays ara capable of handling the power without
damage? And, while I am thinking about it, why not retune during receive
if the setting is already memorized? That would be really cool!
Bob, thanks again for taking me into the right direction.

Gernot,
I take some of that back. If the macro output does not change, there still
might be a problem with your KXAT3. I think my test is still worth doing,
because if the output does change, then there would seem to be a documented
problem to go to Elecraft Support with.
Feel free to ask me for clarification, if I've confused more than helped.
