The advantage of the present s-meter display is that you have a visual
indication for adjusting the RF gain level to the noise level. I'm not
sure that is a huge advantage as everyone probably fine adjusts the RF
gain by ear anyway. 

I do often find myself momentarily turning up the RF gain to see the
indicated level of a weaker signal. (Please, no lectures about RST and
s-meters: the K3 has an accurate s-meter that can measure the signal
level at the antenna input. Some of us like knowing what that level is
in absolute terms.)

So, yeah, I also would like to have the option to use the non-variable
s-meter.
