Fred, I don't believe there is any reason to turn agc off anymore with the newer firmware that allow for more threshold.
It is sometimes a advantage to ride the rf gain to make a signal more easy to copy and the noise easier on the ears. A quiet antenna helps too. My hy gain hytower vertical has less band noise than my loop on 20. I've got maybe a bad habit using the rf gain for a volume control. When you do this it renders the s meter useless. I've kinda got away from that but using rf gain to the point where it only raises the the smeter a couple digits doesn't do much. Agc off has no effect on the s meter issue. Also there's more noise on ssb due to a wider bandwidth. Hope that helps. I don't want to beat this to death but it a aggravation for some. I've got used to it, I've had to! A 20db attenuator would have helped too. Noise reduction can help but it reduces the volume it seems and if very aggressive you get that under water sounding thing.
