Fred,
Shoring the Left and Right channels of the speaker output together is
not a good thing to do.
Use a stereo plug and just wire the external speaker to tip and shell
and leave the ring open.

I need to connect a mono external speaker to the stereo SPKR jack on
the back panel. Cady's book lists a Radio Shack part to do this,
however it produces two mono outputs [R & L] from the stereo jack, and
is a little to large physically for my installation.
Can I use a smaller 1-circuit stereo-->mono adapter that ties right
and left channels together with CONFIG: SPKRS 1 set? I understand the
part about not plugging a mono plug into the jack, just not sure if
connecting R and L together is OK.
