A space either before or after should not cause any odd behavior. The only time I have seen this problem is when a computer was connected to the P3/K3 and the K3 terminal utility was running. But I remember you stated that the computer was not connected to the P3/K3 serial line.
Just curious, how fast is your WPM set to?
