Is the OP/DL switch to the OP (operate) position before removing power?
That is the only possible reason I can think of, and it should not clear the firmware even then. Can you tell us the whole scenario? How do you determine that it has lost its firmware - KRC2 Utility or other means?

Are you running it with a K2 or a K3?

Rhetorical question -- Why do things like this come up on Friday after Elecraft support has gone for the weekend?
