The KAT500 Utility is a Host PC program. The KAT500 has a serial (COMM) port
connector on its back panel that uses a 3.5mm TRS connector, similar to the
KX3, XG3, W1, and W2. Elecraft supplies a KXUSB USB to Serial Adapter that has
a USB connector on the Host PC end and a 3.5 mm TRS plug on the KAT500 end.
You may also use a KXSER cable, which has a 9-pin D-shell connector on one end
and a 3.5mm TRS plug on the other.

I use a four-port USB to Serial Adapter and a couple of KXSER cables. I
connect these four ports to a K3/P3, a KPA500, a KAT500 (with a KXSER cable)
and to a KX3 or XG3 (also with a KXSER cable).

If you plug one end of the KXUSB into the back panel of the KAT500 (the "PC
DATA" port) and the USB end into your PC, Windows should install a device
driver for that USB cable and provide a COM port address for it. If you're not
sure which COM port it is, see the KAT500 Utility Help text on "Troubleshooting
- Finding the right serial port". The KXUSB uses an FTDI chip set, and its COM
port should appear and disappear from the Device Manager list of COM ports as
you insert and remove the USB connector from the PC.

Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

Group,
How do you access the KAT500 Utility? I do not see a COM port that
is connected to the KAT500. If I have the K3, the P3, the KPA500 and the
KAT500 all connected together with the proper cabling and everything is working
fine, where does the KAT500 Utility get its COM port? I have tried connecting
the PC data cable up, but no COM shows that the Utility recognizes. What’s the
secret here? I’m missing something and there are no directions in the manual
that helps.

                                     Roger K8RS K3 S/N 280
