Pete, I have had great results with a marine starting battery (Optima yellow top) for past 4.5 years.
It stays on floor in battery case with 10A circuit breaker in series at positive terminal. A 2 stage 2A charger maintains the battery during receive and off time. Setup is quiet, no heat, and isolated from ac power surges.
