Lee, After you've installed a toroid, check the resistance across the toroid leads (all pairs if it's a transformer) at the solder pads. If it's zero, you can be assured you stripped the leads properly and got a good solder joint on the board. Since I started doing that, I've never had a bad toroid installation.
