It may be that the Elecraft placement is based on decades old CW
convention/tradition. 1966 ARRL Handbook, Page 555, "Controls"

"The majority of c.w. operators tune with the left hand, preferring to
leave the right hand free for coping messages and handling the key, and
so the receiver should be mounted where the knob can be reached by the
left hand."

Followed with:

"Phone operators aren't tied down this way, and tune the communications
receiver with the hand that is more convenient."

Same comments found in the 1962 and 1970 Handbooks.
