INTERESTING

I recall visiting with 9M2DQ on Pulau Langkawi in 1963 and Jim
commented "on how American equipment" isn't made for use in
the tropics; HQ-170A required regular attention. Fond memories
from my 2.5 years as 9M2JJ

Now I read where one needs to pay attention as to where the KX3
goes portable; by land or by sea.....

O.K.
I have the KPA100 ordered and the 500 hust got here so I will need the cable
and I have it, came with my order as I addedvit in.
I have the Heil headset as well for base use.
So the PTT switch plugs into the ACC2 cable, that into ACC2 jack.
Where are you using the mono 2.5mm headphone mono jack ?
I have stereo headphones plugged into Phones.

What are using for a mic, the little condenser type plugged directly into the
Nic hack or a mic on the headsetvor what ?
When menu is set to PTT kow , VOX isvoff then whenvyou push PTT does the mic
become open for TX ?that iplugged in to Mic ?
This means it has to be a buttonless nic ( no PTT ) so can I use a headset
microphone like on standard cell phone or even Icom style ( different plug but
maybe gain is high enough ) and just plug it's line into Mic ?

Like others I'm looking for a wireless solution which may just be this PTT

I followed that procedure (EE Initialization / restored configuration) with no
change. I am using the latest 1.13.5.9 K3 utility software.

On SSB, now the radio will transmit about 5-10 seconds, then the power drops to zero and
the monitored audio goes silent (although the transmit relay stays engaged). I am
occasionally getting ERR FW2, and once I got a "New K3 UTIL software required"
message on the front panel.

I tested the radio on CW, where it performs similarly. After transmitting about
5 seconds, it goes into a solid keydown (on the sidetone) / no power output /
transmit relay locked / ERR FW2.

Anyone have any other ideas or is it time to ship it back to Elecraft?

Tnx,

Will

Operating the IARU contest and a previously solid K3 would cease putting out
power, although it remained in transmit. After an hour of doing this
intermittently, I started getting an ERR FW2. Power off/on would clear this.
After another hour, I received a prompt on the front panel that mentioned
something to the effect of "Use K3 utlity program". After it locked up with
the ERR FW2, I downloaded the latest utility and all new software - MCU
04.67, FPF 1.15, DSP1 2.81, DSP2 2.81.

It worked for an hour and I started receiving the ERR FW2 again.

Any ideas??

no you can use a standard desktop mic or a headset with a mic or a
laptop mini mic. with a standard 3.5mm jack on it.
you just have to change the mic bias setting in the menu to on, for this
type of mic to work.

Err FW2 indicates a firmware problem. Try reloading the firmware and if
not successful, contact support/

  From the K3 user manual
" Try re-loading MCU firmware first; then
try initializing parameters (pg. 66)".

One thing. Make sure there is *nothing* connected to the rig: no logging
program, no computer, etc. Just the power supply, antenna, mic and key. RF
getting into external devices can do weird things.

If that doesn't help, call Elecraft customer support. The number is in your
manual. They will lead you through any additional troubleshooting and then,
if the problem isn't fixed, give you the information for returning it for
factory service.

Good Evening,
A fine week in the Pacific Northwest. The dry season is here with
no rain in sight. Just the morning fog dropping its normal amount of
moisture. The hummingbirds have been very active catching insects
between the fir branches. I am also seeing elk sign every time I go for
a hike. I never see the sneaky beasts but they are all around me.

Propagation has been fairly good the times I have tried it. The sun
has been adding its daily dose of ions with no really big blasts. I
have heard some static from it but not enough to limit communications.
The QSB it causes is more of an impediment.

Howdy K3' people:

There is an 8-element yagi connected to the KAT500 for the K3 internal
6m selected 6m antenna.

I set KAT500 default antenna for 6m to Ant2.

On the KAT500 I can press 'TUNE' then tap K3 "XMIT" and the KAT500 will
usually settle on or about 1.1:1 .

Then when I .run a WSJT, Data, QSO, if the KAT500 is left in "AUTO",
re-tuning will often take occupy 10 or more seconds of the time before
the KAT500 finds a place it likes. Often the SWR is then in the RED or
worse, FAULT. Not very often on FAULT however.

Mostly what I see are SWR's around 2:1 . (KAT500 in AUTO .

If I put KAT500 in BYP, the K3 often shows SWR's of 2 to 3.

If left in AUTO, the mismatch is apparent in received audio.

Without the KAT500, the antenna itself exhibits a 1.3 SWR consistently .

The constant re-tuning or irregular attenuation due to mismatch form
KAT500 is annoying. On a weak-signal QSOit means the difference from
making the QSO or not decoding.
