I was using the computer sound card temporarily for PSK31 and then JT65. I bought a quality sound card emu 0204 for use with LP-PAN. I hooked it up to try it for digital modes and the results were significant for weak signals. I could dig 3-6 db further into the mud for weak signals with the much better sound card. It didn't make much difference on strong signals, but it brought in a whole lot more workable weak signals.

I now have a SignaLink as I needed the 0204 for the panadapter. I think the 0204 still has a very slight edge, but I haven't really done any extensive testing. Both are far better than what came with my Dell desktop.

I agree with your advice. You have a great receiver to pull out weak signals. Now get something comparable to translate them. Get something decent to begin with, then move on to something else to worry about.

The bottom line (to me) is that you have a serious radio, you're building a
serious station, why diddle around with being cheap on a critical part, the
sound card by trying to multiuse the computer sound card. That's like
putting retread tires on a sports car. ;o)
