Yes, you are correct, there is no way for the internal keyer to increment a QSO 
number.

As far as alternatives, I use N1MM software for contesting.  I am sure, many 
others will recommend other software and external keyers to accomplish.  So, I 
would suggest due diligence on your part, to make sure you come up with the way 
that will suit your needs the best.  Take your time and investigate all avenues.
