I recently finished up my KPA500 and it is a treat! I was astonished when my
first CQ call on 40m was answered by a station in Slovenia! No fancy antenna,
just a G5RV at about 50' running due N & S, to get E/W lobes.

Only one thing I can't figure out and I haven't been able to find in the
documentation - P10 of the KPA500 operating manual mentions using the AUX cable
between the amp and the K3 and that doing so will allow the user to set two
per-band power levels at the K3 - one to drive the KPA500 when it's in OPER
mode and another when in STBY. I'd like to set K3 power to about 20 W for OPER
and about 50 W for STBY. I have the cable connected properly (daisy chained
through the KAT500). When I switch the KPA500 from OPER to STBY and vice
versa, the K3 so indicates via a message in the VFO B area, so I think the K3
knows what's going on.

However, for the life of me I can't seem to make the K3 power level change with
the OPER / STBY mode change. The K3 power level seems to remain on the last
one set, irrespective of which mode the KPA500 is in. So, if I put the amp in
OPER and set the K3 power to 20 watts, then switch to STBY, the power stays at
20 watts. Then, while still in STBY, I change the K3 power to 50 watts and
switch the KPA500 to OPER, the K3 power seems to remain at 50 watts. No way i
want to drive the amp with 50 watts!

What am I doing wrong? Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be toggled?

Puzzled.
