You could always copy the preamp section of the KAF2 on a
small piece of .1" perf board and install it on the audio
filter headers.  It would be all of one IC and half a dozen
leaded components.  My guess is that you could do it all for
less than $20 even if you needed to buy all new parts at
Radio Shack.
