If you have a cheap lamp dimmer around the house it will provide an excellent test to see if your current noise blanker is doing what it was designed to do. I'm thinking of the dimmers that produce a raucous buzz in the receiver whenever they are set about half-bright. The K2 noise blanker kills such noise in my rig very nicely. Ignition noise from an engine can do that too. If you don't have a cheap lamp dimmer, string a wire near the engine of your automobile or lawn mower to pick up the pop-pop of the spark plugs firing.
If it kills that stuff, it is doing what it was designed to do - blank out repetitive high-amplitude noise pulses by literally interrupting the receive signal path during the noise interval. That technology is not effective against random or broad-band noise. IIRC, some of the mods lengthened the period during which the receive signal path was cut off. That's a design trade-off. The longer the cutoff period, the more *everything* is blanked. The K3 and KX3, use DSP to tackle noise reduction in quite different ways and can handle a much wider range of noise types. 73 Ron AC7AC -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Stan AE7UT Sent: Wednesday, October 09, 2013 2:07 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Elecraft] KNB2 - looking for experience with mods that made it effective I just recently built the KNB2 and it does not seem to be very effective for the noise pulses near my house. I also put a the KNB1 in my K1 with disappointing results. I'm comparing this to my K3 and KX3 that almost completely eliminate the noise. Doing some internet research there appears to be a couple of mods that people embrace. I was looking at LA3ZAs site and he shows two mods. Any advice before I start slinging solder?
