Jim,

There are several 3 state chargers available, I would recommend one of them.
If your battery is of the automotive type and it is normally fully charged, I would suggest that a small power source adjusted for 13.8 volts will do just as well. That is how the float charge is maintained for residential alarm systems and emergency lighting systems. It does not take much current to keep the charge topped off, but may take a long time to charge a discharged battery.
