This happens when averaging is turned on in tracking mode. Whenever the VFO is tuned more than about 1 pixel on the P3 screen the averaging is reset to avoid "smearing" of the spectrum display.
Two of the nicest features of the P3 are the Fixed Tune Mode and Averaging. Both are always turned on in my P3s, and I set averaging for the longest time. The combination of these two features makes it much easier to find signals in a band without much activity, and to distinguish signals from noise.
