If your headset has a very low sensitivity, that would cause you to increase the AF Gain control more so than you would when not using the headset. If that is the case, the level of the sidetone could be significantly lower relative to the received audio while using the headset than when listening to the speaker(s). Try increasing the MON level while wearing the headset, and see if you can then hear it.
