I learned something new today (I've learned a lot new over the past 10
days or so about the K3). The latest thing got me in trouble. ;)
Trying to work FT5ZM on RTTY tonight on 20 m. I have everything set.
He's QSX up about 10 - 20 kHz and I'm all set. I've gotten 14.080
programmed in. I've hit A > B twice to get everything from A to B. I
turn on SPLIT and I turn on SUB. I hear FT5ZM send QRZ UP. I transmit.
Nothing - I'm not surprised.
I see someone send UP UP UP.
I think that he's... Well, nevermind what I think.
I see FT5ZM send QRZ UP and I transmit again.
I see W4JBB UP UP.
Huh? I am UP.
I don't transmit again. I start testing with my KX3. I cannot hear my K3
transmit anywhere *near* my TX frequency. I dial around. I *finally*
find my signal at 14.0785 which is where it should be if I'm not split.
I swear, I'm split. I can see it on the display. SUB and SPLIT are lit.
My TX is 14.113, my RX is 14.080. I'm split! Why am I transmitting on
14.0785?
My across-the-street neighbor (who is a ham) calls and asks if
everything is okay. He can see my callsign on his display, but he cannot
hear my signal. I told him I was sorry - I'm testing something.
I'm at 0.5 W going into my dummy load. I wasn't thinking he'd be
listening. He said it was all good and wondered if there was anything he
could offer. I told him I didn't know what was wrong. I've been working
split on CW and voice and haven't had any issues. I cannot figure this
out. Split on DATA is *not* working.
I look at the display again and I see -S. "What is that," I wonder.
I think, "You know, I set that to work WINMOR a while back for RX/TX
turnaround. I wonder if that has anything to do with my problem."
I hold PF1 and turn off -S. Voila! I am transmitting where I should be.
I still don't understand all I should about the K3, but I do love this
radio.
I thought I'd share. Perhaps the rest of you are not as "jump in where
angels fear to tread" as I am. If so, maybe this will save you some
embarrassment.
