I don't have a KX3, but when I use the notch on my K3, the overall audio volume decreases ... as it should. My hearing aids will automatically notch out the siren of a fire truck going by, and things get fairly quiet for a short time [can't copy CW on a speaker with my hearing aids, they think it's a fire truck :-)]. The notch does have a non-zero bandwidth of course and it will take out some noise around the center frequency and thus things may sound quieter.
