There *are* good USB to serial adapters. Buy reputable brands from reputable suppliers and you should not have a problem. If you buy one that does not work, it should be returnable as defective if the dealer is reputable. The Elecraft KUSB uses a genuine FTDI chip, so that one should not be a problem. I suspect the 'bargain counter' no-name brands may be the major ones with the fake chips.
