I don't need a radio to talk to friends, and in fact I could argue pretty persuasively that I have more varied and interesting friends outside of ham radio than within it. Ham radio does, however, give me the opportunity to learn more about electronics ... and antennas ... and propagation ... and communication techniques. The fact that I am able to do that with like minded friends is a plus, of course, especially since none of them are presumptuous enough to tell me what I should derive from it.

Gents, Find some friends. Talk to them. The radio is secondary. Throw up some antennas. Test them. See what they can do. Talk to your friends. Buy the best radio you think you can afford and enjoy it. Take care of your wife and kids. Stop going so beserk about the radios. They are nothing more than a hammer. There are good ones and bad ones. They all get the job done. I really like what I like. You like what you like. Get over it and talk to your friends. 5X9 and signal reports are no different than slam bam thank you maam. So say I Bill N2WL Married for 40 years. Hamming for > 50.
