Larry,

The cable only needs to contain pins 2, 3 and 5 (TXD, RXD and Signal Ground). They should be wired straight through (nor crossover).

Everything on K3 Utility is greyed out because the communications with the K3 is not complete.

if with "APC connection cable" you mean the ones used on UPSes by APC,
be careful that they are not plain rs232, they have some circuitry
molded in the connector. At least mine does.
