The power supply described here,
http://chuckprice.wordpress.com/2014/04/06/kx3-portable-lipo-power-solution/,
is indeed very elegant and offers lots of protection to a LiPo battery
However, if you want a more straightforward lightweight power solution
I've had good experiences so far with a Zippy 30C Series 4200 4 cell
battery. Max voltage is 13.2V and for SOTA activations this has more
that enough voltage stability to maintain full power over a couple of
hours SSB operation. I have two Zippys in case I'm doing a two day
weekend activation.
I carry the Zippy in an old sock (washed!) and this in turn goes in an
old biscuit box that contains my KX3 (wrapped in bubble wrap), my Yamaha
CM-500 headset and other small accessories. This then goes in my
backpack and I've found this is more than enough protection for both the
battery and KX3. The power lead between the KX3 and battery can be
fused for short circuit protection. I use a Turnigy Accucell 6 for
external charging.
