Hoop / K9QJS pointed out there was an LCD brightness adjustment. Mine was set at 20, I've since turned it up to 100. I'll be trying it out again today, but I suspect it will go a long ways towards helping. Just wanted to post a follow-up in case anybody else runs into this.
