I would not say that it is not recommended, but yes, it can interact
with other VOX controls and a happy medium can be difficult to find.
It sounds like you had the noise gate set to a high threshold. See the
TX GATE menu entry in the manual, which states "Set the threshold high
enough to cut off transmit audio due to local noise, but not so high
that it causes your voice to drop out too frequently."
