I just figure it's the digital equivalent of dirty capacitor plates in the old, 
analog days.  It's annoying but apparently just the encoding pulses scattering 
pings into the circuits which find their way to my earbuds.  

Unlike dirty capacitor plates, I can't see where to blow out the dust.  :-)
