To follow up on an old message. I took the antenna down and inspected it. The connection between the feed line and the copper-clad steel antenna wires used galvanized hardware. This hardware was quite corroded. A private email had suggested this possibility. The corrosion was probably acting as a diode and generating harmonics from the AM signal. I replaced the hardware with brass. We'll see how long it lasts.

I switched to 160 meters with the band switch and the P3 showed the band filled with what looked like AM signals. I tuned one of them at 1.810 MHz and listened. The station identified as KGO, about 20 miles away with three beautiful towers at the edge of San Francisco bay. (Serious antenna envy here.)
