John,

Although I have no 'hands-on' info about the Proset K2 or Handi Mic, I have been using for about 2 years a ' genuine ' Heil Proset Plus Heasdset / boom mic (HC4 and HC5 elements) with my K2/100 and other rigs. With the mic about 3 inches from my mouth, my K2/100 #3255 delivers 100w PEP without difficulty on all bands when driving a calibrated 50 ohm resistive load, without the use of any form of additional audio preamp. I suspect that if either of Heil's HC4 or HC5 mic elements are used in a desk mic, an audio preamplifier might well be required since the distance between mic and mouth is usually more than 3 inches in this case.

Even though I spend most of my SSB time 'brawling' (hmmmm) in pile-ups, I have yet to use the HC4 'DX' mic element in anger. Usually SSbC is at 2-1 with the HC5.

My K2/100 does not contain any 'official modifications' but does contain some 'birdie killers', and a more beefy phones jack is now at the rear.

Although the cost of the Proset Plus was/is high, I have no regrets. Features worth mentioning are that the headset is very comfortable, and remains so during very long periods of operating. Also the switchable phasing between left and right earphones can be very useful when digging out very weak signals in the midst of strong QRM., CW or SSB.

The usual disclaimer, just a very satisfied customer.

Geoff

Subject: [Elecraft] mike selection

I am just starting the RF board so I still have plenty of time...I'm a little puzzled about choice of mic.

Is there a difference between the Proset K2 on the Elecraft site and the Proset Plus on the Heil site?

How does it compare to the Handi Mic (and which model to select?)?

Frankly, the Heil mics seem awfully expensive.

Why did the MD2/CB1 get discontinued...Is there another mic out there that is the same or similar?

The reflector site had a lot of opinions: from Radio Shack to Icom and beyond but I could find little in the way of consensus. Also, I'm not far enough with the kit to understand the various rewiring requirements and whether I'll end up with limitations down the road on choice of mic.

John
