Has anyone experimented with replacing the main tuning knob on the KX1 with buttons? I think I'm going to buy the KX1 to take on my camping trips with me but I looks like that tuning knob almost doubles the height of the entire unit. Since the knob is just an encoder would it be possible to replace it with two buttons (one for up, one for down) that auto-repeat when held down?
I'm aware this wouldn't be as user-friendly and would slow down tuning but I'm not planning on using this rig in contests, just communicating with friends while I'm in the woods. The main problem this leaves is the three other knobs (RF gain, Filter, AF gain) sticking up but I imagine I can figure something out for those. I realize this doesn't save a ton of space but with an already full backpack making room for the KX1 means leaving other things behind and I'd like to save as much space as possible. Thoughts?
