Thanks all for the many responses (private and through the reflector). You guys taught me a few very useful tricks along the way!
The ground leads are now where they are supposed to be without having damaged RP4 & RP5. Soldering time per Xtal can was no more than 3 seconds with a temp controlled Weller solder station so all should be FB I hope... Thanks also to Martin for providing the link to the photographs.
