Although the young ham already has one, I think that radios like the FT100 are a poor choice for a new ham. Yes, it's CHEAP, but IMO, new hams need a rig that is very simple, straightforward, and easy to operate. That does NOT describe an FT100, D version or otherwise. I owned one for a while, and I found it very frustrating to use. EVERYTHING is in a menu, there are bunches of menus, and so on.
