Russ, There is a input A and input B switch on the SP3. I only use input A to the speaker, so when on headphones I push the A/B switch on the SP3 to mute the speaker.
I have a Behringer MicroAmp HA400 4 channel stereo headphone amplifier I use for field day, when we might have multiple folks on headphones listening to the radio.
