Thanks to those responding to my message, particularly Harry Mayer and Don Wilhelm. I simply misread (misunderstood) the Digital Modes section and thought I needed to set the mode to PSK D even when I was using a soundcard input/output and software, rather than using the KX3's display for received text and a paddle for transmit. When I corrected this, all worked fine.
