I can't "advise what you're doing wrong," but ...

Has Windows assigned two USB connections to the same COM port? You can tell in device mangler. That's happened to me and I've had to go in and change one of the ports to an unused one. This never happened to me under XP. Apparently, Windows' USB IQ is inversely proportional to Windows version #. [:-)
