I would cut a few pieces of 1/4 inch plywood and cover it with black fabric (contact cement, etc.). Just put the pieces between the gear that need contact protection.

I do not personally have the problem, so this is just a suggestion for those who do. If you normally use the tilt stand, cut the plywood so it is shaped to sit on the desk/shelf and the top is angled the same as the top of the equipment. I would think the top of the plywood separator should be a bit below the top of the equipment.
Just an idea, implementation is left to "the student".
