It depends a lot on what sort of "field" you happen to be in. On a quiet mountaintop or spot in the woods, it's plenty good enough unless you happen to have much hearing loss. If the "field" is noisy (N6WM's example of surf on the beach is a good one) or if you're in a moving vehicle or parked along a busy road, it's probably not nearly loud enough.

The KX2 and KX3 are designed for backpacking, so minimizing current drain is an important design objective. You'll appreciate this when studying that spec in the manual -- only about 150 mA on RX!  That means that you can run the radio a LOT longer on batteries, which reduces the weight you have to drag up the trail!
