Or perhaps they were put to sleep by the X8.2 solar flare that pretty much 
killed HF propagation a few hours ago.

Having spent too much of my life waiting out hurricanes in south Florida (some 
of it involving emergency comm), I agree it is very much not a fun time.
Our family escaped the area this time (Pasco County, FL) so they are safe. Like 
you, I hope all others are as well.
