Hi Noel,

No, you don't have to tie those together unless the software you are using
needs them for some sort of flow control handshaking, but that too, would be
unusual because back in the days of modem RTS (Request to Send) and CTS (clear
to send) were used by the modem to let the terminal (your computer) know it was
ok for it to send data. DTR (Data Terminal Ready) was a handshaking signal
from the data terminal (computer) to let the modem know it was OK to send data
to the terminal. Handshaking flow control is not used these days and so that is
why RTS and DTR are often used by logger programs for CW and PTT. The K3
allows this because its serial port implements them. The KX3 can't because its
serial port is only for data (TxD and RxD).

(An exception that I seem to remember is that some Kenwood radios needed RTS
and CTS jumpered on the radio side.)

Cheers,

Subject: [Elecraft] KXSER CABLE INFO

Hello
I am wiring my own KXSER Rs232 cable ...DB9F TO 3.5 MM JACK
Here is what I have for connections.
DB9F 3.5MM JACK
pin 3........................................Tip
pin 2........................................Ring
pin 5........................................Sleeve.
I saw somewhere that pins 4 (DTR) AND PIN 8 CTS) on the DB9F must be
connected together....
I AM NOT SURE...
Anyone can tell me if those pins 4 and 8 must be together....(CONNECTED)

Thanks
Noel
