That depends on how the external reference is used. The K3 uses a counter lock scheme that does NOT change the phase noise of the internal oscillator. This is real obvious if you measure the 'locked' oscillator. When locked it still drifts around +/- 0.5 Hz. This is just marginally good enough for the ARRL Frequency Measuring Tests.
