I had a QSO with a buddy of mine who was using his FT-817 on 5 watts. Where as I couldn't hear him on 40m SSB (phone), meanwhile I had him at -13 FT8. I'm 1,200 miles due south of him. I was -01 with 20w. While I don't think its magical I do think its a nice feature with poor conditions..
